Holistic living means wellness for mind, body and spirit

A ‘holistic’ or ‘whole person’ approach to healthy aging encompasses the mind, body and spirit.
Physical activity might keep our muscles and lungs busy, for example, but without social engagement, our mental health might suffer. Or, while we might enjoy a rousing game of bridge, if we don’t keep our muscles moving, our physical health might wane, leading to isolation.
“Our residents have a wide variety of activities, programs and amenities at their disposal, all of which contribute to their health and wellbeing,” says Loren Butler, Community Relations Manager at Berwick by the Sea in Campbell River. “By supporting their minds, bodies and emotional well-being, residents feel healthier, more connected and supported as they age.”
Available activities include chair yoga, swimming, mobility and stretching classes, mindfulness for releasing anxiety, and Zumba-gold classes. Residents have plenty of opportunities to connect with each other and the rest of the community as well, through clubs like ‘Timbits and Tales’ with General Manager Paul Cisecki, where residents connect and share their life stories, creative writing classes and their very own choir group, the Berwick Balladeers.
“Supporting our residents and ensuring they can enjoy full, engaging lives during retirement is always a top priority,” Butler says. “After all, happy residents are healthy residents.”
Healthy eating = healthy living
Residents at Berwick by the Sea enjoy delicious seasonal menus, curated by Red Seal chefs using only the freshest ingredients. Rather than face the hassle of grocery shopping and cooking for themselves, they instead look forward to complimentary continental breakfast, three entree choices between the Bistro and Dining Room, a full brunch offered on Sundays along with various healthy snacking options.
“Our residents can pick between our licensed dining room with full table service, allowing them to relax and fully enjoy their meals, or our bistro option, which offers flexibility and convenience in a more casual setting,” Butler says.
Berwick by the Sea also has outdoor dining opportunities during the warmer months on their spacious stone patio, set within their lush, tranquil gardens. Residents who enjoy hosting meals during special occasions can even enjoy the beautiful, private dining room, allowing them to welcome family and friends to a wonderful, intimate dining experience.
“Our Head Chef, Andrew West, who trained under celebrity chef Gordan Ramsay, puts a lot of care and thought into the menus at Berwick by the Sea, and we also have a dietitian that reviews all menus,” Butler adds. “Our meals are prepared with the health of residents in mind but also considering their happiness as well. Meals are meant to be enjoyed and finding the balance between nutrition and flavour is something our kitchen team excels at.”
