More surgeries, faster recoveries: Spring wishlist supports close-to-home orthopedic care

Eight years ago, Dr. Matthew Lewington became Delta Hospital’s first orthopaedic surgeon, and he’s grateful for that time living and working in the community.
“I love how the people here are proud and passionate about our hospital. And I love seeing that pride translate into concrete support that helps the hospital grow, thrive and better serve our community,” he says.
At the same time, the Delta population also continues to grow, and grow older, which brings additional surgical needs. Last year alone, Dr. Lewington alone performed 536 orthopedic surgeries, and sees up to 45 patients a day in his weekly Cast Clinic.
To ensure Delta residents can continue accessing timely care close to home, the local orthopedic team recently welcomed Dr. Danny Gillis, who brought his expertise in knee and shoulder surgeries; today, he and Dr. Lewington want to expand the hospital’s Orthopedic Surgical Care, providing a wider range of more complex surgeries.
Beyond a skilled team, that goal requires an investment in state-of-the-art equipment – equipment that allows for less invasive techniques so patients recover faster and get back to independent, healthy living and the activities they love.
Among the items on the Spring Wish List, for example, is a Fibulock Nail System, an ankle fracture treatment that can have patients walking within two weeks, if not sooner.
Other items on the list will let Dr. Lewington, Dr. Gillis and their team support patients with more complicated cases, such as repairing past knee surgeries among the community’s growing senior population, or more complex surgeries common with Delta’s many young athletes.
Included are:
- Bunionectomy – two at $17,500
- DynaNite Nitinol Staple – two at $14,000
- Meniscal Root – two at $14,500
- Collateral Ligament – two at $10,000
- Ankle – Distal Tibial Set – one at $40,000
- Ankle – Fibulock Nail System – one at $46,000
As Lisa Hoglund, Executive Director of the Delta Hospital and Community Health Foundation, notes, the expertise to provide this specialized care in Delta is here; now the team needs the advanced equipment to make it happen. Community support for the hospital’s Spring Wish List can make it possible.
“Your gift will help Dr. Lewington and Dr. Gillis provide comprehensive, exemplary Orthopedic Care to everyone in our community – our elders, our athletes and many others who need it now and in the future.”
That relationship between the hospital and its local community is as special for the medical teams as it is for patients and their families.
“There’s a continuous exchange of care and support between us and you, our donors. It’s truly special to witness and be a part of,” Dr. Lewington reflects. “Thank you so much for being there for us, so that we can be there for you. My colleagues and I are in the business of making people better, and that business couldn’t run without your generosity.”
