The printed guide lists more than 100 local farms, detailing the variety of fruits, vegetables, meats and other artisanal products available. Whether you’re looking for the crisp taste of fresh-picked apples in the fall or the sweetness of succulent summer berries, the guide offers a season-by-season breakdown of farm offerings.

This year’s guide emphasizes the importance of supporting local agriculture, which brings the community numerous benefits. When consumers buy directly from local farms, they contribute to the local economy, help create jobs and reduce environmental impact by minimizing the need for long-distance food transportation.

“Buying local supports our farmers but also provides your family with healthier food options,” Jensen explains. “Food that doesn’t travel long distances is fresher and retains more nutrients.”

The diversity on the farms around Greater Victoria is remarkable, featuring everything from traditional crops to exotic fruits, heritage animal breeds and innovative organic practices. This diversity ensures a rich selection that caters to all tastes and dietary needs, promoting food security and sustainability in the region.

In addition to the physical guide, the Island Farm Fresh website offers a user-friendly digital version where consumers can search for farms by region or category. This online tool is especially useful for planning visits to farms or locating specific products, enhancing the connection between consumers and local food producers.

The guide also serves as an educational tool, illustrating the cycles of food production and the benefits of sustainable farming practices. “It’s a way for families to engage with their food sources, to understand where their meals come from, and to appreciate the effort that goes into farming,” says Jensen.
