“Supporting food security initiatives is crucial because a thriving community is one where everyone has access to nutritious food,” says store manager at Thrifty Foods Hillside, Gordon Simons. Photo courtesy of Thrifty Foods Hillside.
At the intersection of local business and community vitality, Thrifty Foods Hillside is both a purveyor of groceries and a cornerstone of community support.
Store manager Gordon Simons, emphasizes the natural synergy between the store and the Oaklands Community Centre, including the Victoria supermarket's support of Oaklands Community Association for several years.
“It's about the mutual support system we’ve cultivated. Our customers are members of this community, and supporting local initiatives is embedded in our DNA,” he explains.
Over the past three years under Simons' management, Thrifty Foods Hillside has contributed to various community-led initiatives, channeling support into areas where it’s most needed, including the community association’s programs to enhance community engagement and boost food security.
Among the standout initiatives supported by Thrifty Foods is the queer and trans farmers market, an event that supports local agriculture and champions inclusivity and diversity. “These events resonate with our core values and allow us to engage with the community on a deeper level,” Simons says.
The store has also played a significant role in supporting the Community Pantry Program, the Holiday Season Seniors Dinner, and an International Women’s Day Event.
“Supporting food security initiatives is crucial because a thriving community is one where everyone has access to nutritious food,” Simons says. “It’s a reciprocal relationship – they support us by being our customers, and we support them through initiatives that enhance their quality of life.
“The Oaklands Community Association does a wonderful job making our community a better place to live,” he adds. “We’re proud to support their grass-roots events and look forward to continuing our partnership.”
