West Shore grocer excited to help grow community at Royal Bay
It was pretty fitting that the first people to pull up a bar stool at the fully licensed Perk Avenue Café inside Royal Bay Quality Foods were the construction workers who’d built the brand new community hub.
Why? Perk Avenue Café was designed to be a community building space, inside the community-focused grocery store Quality Foods. So when the store hosted its grand opening in May 2023, it was a good sign that construction workers putting the finishing touches on Royal Bay’s Commercial Commons (in other words, literally building the community) put down their tools and picked up a cold one at the brand new community hub.
“We’re very excited to help grow Royal Bay. We’ve always focused on being a neighbourhood grocery store, and we love getting involved in the small communities we serve, so it made perfect sense that we’d become the hub for this brand new community,” says Justin Schley, Vice President of Quality Foods.
Now that most of the road and building construction is complete, those who live, work and play in Royal Bay get to build relationships and community — and a lot of that happens at Quality Foods.
“We first tried Perk Avenue in our Port Alberni store in 1995, and it became so popular we soon put a cafe into all of our stores,” says Dianna Rivard, who was the first employee hired at the first Quality Foods, and has been with the company ever since. “Community groups started using Perk Avenue as a meeting place — in fact we actually had to open the store earlier so the running and walking groups could get their coffee. And then we even hosted a wedding, because the couple first met at Perk Avenue!”
