Chilliwack welcomes high-flying circus arts, Anne of Green Gables ballet & more in February

From Lunar New Year celebrations to ballet and whimsical cirque, February at the Chilliwack Cultural Centre is full of laughter and delights! For the first time ever, The Centre celebrates the Lunar New Year with lion dances, a lobby market and an evening performance, while the beloved Ballet Jörgen returns for a delightful Valentine’s Day performance of Anne of Green Gables. FLIP Fabrique’s Blizzard brings fantastical cirque performances to the stage in a flurry of circus arts… from acrobatics to aerials!

On Feb. 9, The Centre welcomes in the 2024 Lunar New Year and ring in the Year of the Dragon. At 10 a.m., the opening lion dance begins, celebrating the start of the new year. Open and free to the public, you are then welcomed into the lobby market and fair, where local businesses and Chinese restaurants present their goods and services to be enjoyed.

Throughout the day, you can witness Chinese Kung-fu, dance and music shows. To wrap up the day, you can join the formal evening show in the HUB International Stage at 7 p.m., where you can witness spectacular traditional Chinese dancing, singing and music.

In the first ballet based on the beloved novel by Lucy Maud Montgomery, Ballet Jörgen will transport you to early 20th century Atlantic Canada with an entrancing story of finding the joys in life, as this charming ballet unfolds around the story of Anne and how she inspires everyone around her!

Lose yourself in a moment of complete wonder on Feb. 16, with Québec’s FLIP Fabrique’s performance of Blizzard!

Journey through winter with circus artists at the top of their game and visual poetry, as Blizzard explores what would happen if winter had taken over both outside and inside. Everything, from the streets and fields to the insides of houses and bedrooms, to under clothes and even in our hearts, Blizzard teaches us that it isn’t just a disaster, but a blank page to fix our mistakes.

Transitioning between dance numbers, banquine acrobatics and aerials, Blizzard explores the playfulness of snow and the despair of long dark days, weaving them together into a deeply intimate performance.
