Collaborative ‘Song Warriors of the North’ musical trio visit Sidney July 11

A unique musical performance showcasing and celebrating northern traditions and resilience comes to the Mary Winspear stage this month.

On July 11, Song Warriors of the North brings together an ensemble of independent artists – Kym Gouchie, Rachelle van Zanten and Naomi Kavka – who together create a unique sound, with shared narratives rooted from their northern homes.

Gouchie, an artist of Lheidli T’enneh, Cree and Secwépemc descent, uses her music as a conduit for change, reconciliation and community building. Her songs – interwoven with Indigenous-folk and country influences – are steeped in the teachings of her ancestors and her personal journey from personal grief to artistic endeavour.

“Through music, we share our stories, our pains and our dreams. It connects us, and through it, I hope to bring people a step closer to personal understanding and healing,” Gouchie shares.

Gouchie's new album is set for release in 2024, with tracks in her ancestral languages aimed for children, with messages that can touch any age.

van Zanten is described by National Geographic's Wade Davis as “straight from the heart, gutsy and intimate.” Known for her slide guitar and powerful vocals, van Zanten brings a roots-rock-blues repertoire to the stage and has carved a niche for herself both in music and as a passionate environmental advocate and community mentor.

“My music and my life are deeply intertwined with the land and its preservation. It’s about forging a connection through the notes and lyrics and through shared values and action,” van Zanten explains.

Kavka, a multi-talented songwriter and performer, adds an indie-rock style to the mix. Her coming album, Then and Now, shows her versatility across genres and an approach to music that's both explorative and unique, giving audiences access to varied emotional and sonic landscapes.

“Every song is a piece of my story, a way to embrace and share the complexity of my experiences,” Kavka says.

Song Warriors of the North showcases individual artistry and celebrates the collaborative spirit that defines Canada’s northern music scene.

Carey Salvador, Operations Manager at the Mary Winspear Centre, says the show is a manifestation of the centre's commitment to nurturing local talent and providing a platform for diverse voices.

“This performance is a showcase of strength, resilience and the incredible talent that emerges from our northern communities. It’s about celebrating these artists who embody the spirit of our lands and our people,” Salvador says.
