Enjoy the warmth and comfort of a fire, minus the mess!
Gas fireplaces offer all the ambiance and warmth of a wood fireplace with the added benefits of being more efficient, convenient and clean.
Love the ambiance and warmth of a fire but not the ash, soot and work that accompany a traditional wood-burning fireplace? A natural gas or propane fireplace might just be the perfect solution!
“Natural gas or propane fireplaces are great alternatives to a traditional wood fireplace,” says Chad Befus, owner of Pacific Fireplaces. “They offer the benefits of heating during power outages and provide an ambiance similar to a wood fireplace – without the hassle of acquiring firewood and manually maintaining a fire yourself.”
Natural gas fireplaces are available as built-ins, inserts or freestanding units, with each offering its own pros and cons.
- Built-in fireplaces: Commonly known as zero-clearance fireplaces, built-in fireplaces provide that traditional fireplace look and appeal. This is often the best choice if replacing an existing zero clearance, or for new builds.
- Inserts: A gas fireplace insert is a great solution for upgrading an old, drafty wood-burning fire with a sealed, efficient, clean and convenient gas fireplace. They’re designed to be retrofitted into an existing wood fireplace and vented out the existing chimney, which in turn helps create a tighter seal on pre-existing masonry chimneys. Installation is typically done within a day and involves little mess and no damage.
- Freestanding units: These are the easiest to install in a home without an existing wood fireplace as they can be easily vented directly out an outside wall or through an attic or roof. Most gas stove installations can be completed in one day with minimal mess and minor loss of floor space.
“Modern gas fireplaces today do an excellent job at mimicking the feel and appearance of a traditional wood-burning fire. They create a warm, inviting space that along with providing an alternative heat source during power outages, makes them a welcome addition to any home.” Befus says. “Switching from electric baseboard to a high efficiency gas fireplace is a simple way to increase comfort and reduce heating bills, but in many situations using a high efficiency fireplace instead of turning on the heat for the entire house can also result in significant savings.
