Epic Die Walküre opera takes the stage in Victoria this October

Every lover of epic storytelling should experience Wagner’s Die Walküre at least once in their life.
The second instalment of Richard Wagner’s tetralogy Der Ring des Nibelungen (The Ring of the Nibelung) follows the intertwined fates of warrior Siegmund, his long-lost twin sister Sieglinde and the fierce Valkyries as they battle fate and the great divine.
“Der Ring des Nibelungen is considered to be the most massive and complicated performance series in opera, and is rarely performed in North America, making this truly a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity,” says Ian Rye, CEO at Pacific Opera Victoria. “And as a recognizable opera, featuring the Ride of the Valkyries, one of the most iconic musical scores of classical music, Die Walküre is an exciting and engaging event for both loyal audience members and those new to opera.”
This three-act epic is designed to be enjoyed over the course of an afternoon or evening. Taking place over five hours with two intermissions, it tells the tale of dramatic gods, heroes, forbidden love and the unfolding of destiny.
“We’re thrilled to bring Die Walküre to our Victoria audience-family. This is the sequel to Wagner’s Das Rheingold, seen here in October 2014. The Ring of the Nibelung (Die Walküre is the second of four parts) is one of the most epic creations in Western music,” says Rye.
“Die Walküre has a great arc of human drama – passionate but forbidden love, revenge, fateful disobedience, a father’s final parting from his beloved daughter – all told with supreme vocalism and sublime, gripping musical imagery. This is a theatrical event unlike any other and a must-see for anyone with a love for the arts.”
