Once you’ve decided it’s time for replacement windows, the next step is to choose a window installer and select your new windows from their product catalogue. But with so many national and local companies on the market, how do you find a trusted window installer in Alberta?
It’s tempting to focus solely on cost, but the price of new windows isn’t always that simple. If your replacement windows are poor quality or improperly installed, that low price may soon cost much more than you expected. Start by investigating the company’s products and services. Where to check window company’s online reviews you can trust?
To find a reliable window installer, ask friends, family and neighbours for recommendations. Personal referrals are a great source of information, and online reviews can also guide you in the right direction.
In Canada, Homestars and The Better Business Bureau are great resources for window company reviews. You’ll be able to see what past clients didn’t like about the company, and see how the company dealt with the problem.
Retrofit(insert) window installation vs. full-frame replacement
When choosing a window installation company, find out what type of installation they perform. There are two types of window installation, full-frame replacement and retrofit (insert), and while some window companies do both, most prefer to specialize in one or the other. Be cautious though — some companies disguise one type of installation as the other, and sell retrofit windows at the price of full replacement.
How can consumers protect themselves? Learn the difference between the two types of installation! In a full-frame replacement, an existing window is removed down to the wall studs surrounding it. At this time, installers can address any moisture damage or rotting wood in the walls surrounding the window. When installing a full-frame replacement and installing new vinyl windows, you’ll also receive new vinyl jambs, vinyl brick moulds and customizable casings.
In a retrofit installation, none of these components are replaced. The new insulated unit will be inserted in the same place as the old one, and the frame is not stripped down to the wall studs. That means there’s no opportunity to inspect it for damage or leaks, and the existing brickmould is usually covered with aluminum capping. Capping can look visually pleasing, similar to a single piece brickmould, but it’s not as energy efficient as a brand new vinyl brickmould.
Ecoline Windows believes full window replacement is always a better long term investment — and full window replacement is also their specialty!
Investigate the warranty
Look for companies that offer a warranty on modern vinyl windows that’s close to 25 years. Be sure to check that the manufacturer’s warranty is matched with an equivalent labour warranty.
Read closely to see how long the insulated glass units, vinyl extrusions, and labour are covered for. Some companies will offer a 5-year labour warranty, but classify things like glass unit replacement as ‘skilled labour’ and charge for it separately. The Ecoline warranty covers vinyl frame, seal failure, hardware, installation and labour for 25 years, hassle free.
You should also consider the company’s reputation and business volume — are they large and stable enough that they’re likely to be in business in 10, 15 or 20 years? A great warranty isn’t very useful if the company no longer exists.
