Maximizing comfort and savings with a ductless heat pump

If you've been on the fence about adding a heat pump to your home and are looking to replace your oil, propane, or natural gas heating system, you have one more reason to move forward.

A new program starting on June 18 offers low- and middle-income applicants up to $16,000 in rebates when switching to a high-efficiency heat pump. Homes requiring an electrical system upgrade could potentially qualify for an additional $5,000 towards the upgrades. In addition to these initial rebates, those switching from oil heating to an electric heat pump will also receive an upfront, one-time payment of $250 from the federal government.

“While this new rebate is geared towards  those switching from oil, natural gas, and/or propane, there are also rebate options available for those switching from older styles of electric heat” notes Chad Befus, owner of Pacific Fireplaces – Heating & Cooling on the Saanich Peninsula.

“When considering a new home heating and cooling system upgrade, homeowners also have to consider if they're going to use a central ducted, ductless heat pump or a combination of both. The best solution varies from home to home, so it’s important to have an expert help evaluate your situation and provide guidance.”

Five reasons to go ductless this summer:

  1. Energy efficiency: Traditional duct systems provide efficient heating and cooling by delivering conditioned air directly to each room without energy losses associated with ductwork. This direct delivery maximizes energy efficiency and helps reduce utility bills, making ductless systems an excellent choice looking to upgrade their heating and cooling systems and reduce their utility bills.
  2. Easy installation: If you don't have existing ducts or if your ducting is in need of expensive repairs before it can be used efficiently, a ductless heat pump may offer an easier and less intrusive alternative.
  3. Room-specific convenience: Enjoy easy customization throughout your house. Each area can enjoy its own micro-climate, ensuring optimal comfort for everyone.
  4. Improved indoor air quality: With units available that can filter out particles down to one micron in size, a ductless system with a multi-stage filtration system reduces airborne dust, bacteria, pollen, and other common pollutants. A ductless system is a great solution for improving indoor air quality.
  5. Compact design: Ductless heat pumps have a compact design and can be installed high on a wall, near the floor, or even connected to a mini ducting system added into the attic.
