Wetaskiwin seeks residents of all ages to help guide recreation in the city

Whether you're an avid runner, you're exploring community connections through pickleball or you want more opportunities for local teens to get active, if you're passionate and local sports and recreation, the City of Wetaskiwin wants to hear from you!

The City is seeking members for the new Regional Wetaskiwin Recreation Board, which will act as an advisory board to Wetaskiwin Council in partnership with City administration.

And as the City prepares to review its Recreation Master Plan, last updated in 2013, there's no better time to get involved, notes Zanette Frost, Manager of Recreation.

“We have an active sport community in Wetaskiwin so the swim clubs or soccer clubs could be involved, for example, but so ould a resident whi is just interested in what recreation is and hoe they might interact with that,” Frost says.

The board will focus on recreation programs, services and amenities in the City of Wetaskiwin that benefit residents of both the city and surrounding county.

The City is hoping to welcome two youth age 13 to 24 to the board and six adults. “The more diversity we have the better, so I'd really like to encourage anyone with an interest in recreation to get involved,” Frost says. “It would be really great to get 50 per cent of people from active sport, like soccer and swimming, and the other 50 per cent from the recreational side.”

In addition to making a difference in local community recreation, participating in the board is also a great opportunity to connect with others volunteers and gain valuable experience.

Recognizing people's busy schedules, Frost is aiming to keep the time commitment light, and after an initial half-day orientation, the commitment will likely be one two-hour meeting per month, along with any ancillary projects board members would like to engage in.
